This chapter can be read aloud to you — a quiet, unhurried voice, nothing added to the words themselves.

There was a night when I convinced myself everyone would be better without me. It wasn't dramatic. It was quiet, and it was reasonable, and that's what scared me later.

I sat on the bathroom floor because the tile was cold and the cold was the only thing that felt like a fact. I had a list in my head of everyone I thought I was costing something.

What saved me wasn't a revelation. It was a text that arrived at 2:41 AM from someone who had no idea. Three words about nothing. I read it eleven times.

I stayed. Not because I felt better, but because I was curious what the morning looked like. It looked ordinary. It's been a long time now, and ordinary is still the thing I'm most grateful for.

A reflection

What ordinary thing kept you here longer than you planned?
